Just as I’m exploring the Far Cry set in the past, I caught this news on my Facebook newsfeed that’s posted on the official Facebook page of Far Cry. It asks whether the next Far Cry should take place in the future.
Believe it or not, just a few days after Far Cry Primal launched, I was talking to a friend about how Far Cry 5 is going to join the club and become a futuristic first-person shooter.
Now, I’m not a hater of futuristic shooters, but the thing is, there’s just so many of them out there. I’ll spare you the names, but after playing Destiny and Call of Duty Black Ops 3, I’m not really into futuristic sci-fi shooters anymore.
Don’t get me wrong, Destiny, despite its lack of a good narrative, is a beautiful game. I loved every bit of it. I only hope some missions weren’t so difficult that it was impossible to finish without joining co-op with other players. Call of Duty Black Ops 3 also lacks a good storyline. But it doesn’t offer beautiful visuals like Destiny. It seemed to me like making things futuristic doesn’t always make them as exciting as the developers expect.
Sure, there are futuristic games like Mass Effect that just hit the mark (and then some). But making a game in the futuristic world while simultaneously making it exciting with a good storyline is not an easy thing to do. It’s especially true for the Far Cry franchise since this game heavily relies on the narrative.
I’m pretty confident that the next Far Cry will be set in space given how popular the futuristic theme in video games is right now. But I’m really rooting for that to not happen. I don’t want yet another game set in a futuristic world. I’ve had plenty, and I have a feeling that Ubisoft won’t be able to come up with a narrative good enough to justify a Far Cry game set in space.
When you think about it, however, it does make sense why Ubisoft may want to make the next Far Cry in a futuristic world. Not only have futuristic, space-themed games been popular these past few years, the Far Cry franchise has also run out of stories to tell. Far Cry 1, 2, 3, and 4 are set more or less at the present time. Far Cry Primal goes way back to 10,000 BC. The only thing that remains is the future. And no matter how much we cry, the future could be the theme of the next game in Far Cry franchise.
What do you think about it? Would you like to have Far Cry 5 set in space?
